Savernake Team Walk and Outdoor Service: Sunday 7th September 2008
On Sunday 7th September all are warmly invited to the annual Savernake Team Walk, Outdoor Service and Picnic.
The Start
We gather in the centre of Wilton by the Swan Inn at the junction with Hollow Lane (post code SN8 3SS) for a 10 a.m. start, clothed and shod for the forecasted weather. Car parking will be a few yards away in Manor Farm yard, by kind permission of Mr Peter Lemon.
Please bring picnic contributions (sausage rolls, quiches, sandwiches, salads, etc) in plastic boxes if possible, and a rug or something to spread on the grass. Cold drinks will be provided at the picnic. If you would like a hot drink, please bring your own. If you would like to leave your picnic offer at the picnic site before the walk, someone will be at Wilton Windmill from 9.30 a.m. to receive contributions.
The Route
From Manor Farm, we walk in company on public footpaths and minor roads on a roughly circular route of about 3 miles with the occasional gentle gradient. Our route takes us past the Swan Inn and through Wilton village. We leave the public road opposite the village pond to take the footpath beside Wilton Water. On reaching the Kennet and Avon Canal we turn right to walk along the tow path for about a mile. At New Bridge we turn right and walk up to Wilton Brail. We carry on through the Brail to the Bedywn to Wilton road, which we cross. We continue on the footpath across the field to Bedwyn Brail, which we enter. We continue straight on until, at the 164 metre spot height, we reach a track running from north to south. Here we make a right turn (to the south). We continue through the clearing parallel with the old conduit until we bear riht (west). On reaching the byway we turn left. On gaining the Shalbourne to Wilton road at a point south west of Hillbarn Farm, we turn right and walk to Wilton Windmill. Here we gather for our Service and picnic on the grass, by kind permission of Wilton Windmill Society. We are very grateful to the local farmers over whose land our walk takes us and for their advice on the route.
Map of the Route
Copies of a map showing the route will be available at the start of the walk.
Dogs
Dogs are welcome but must be on leads throughout.
Access to Loos
Loos will be available at Manor Farm and at the Windmill (Portaloo).
First Aid
There will be a First Aider with kit among the walkers. S/he will bring up the rear of the walk. If anyone needs First Aid during the walk, please send a message back to the First Aider.
The Service and Picnic
Between about 11.30 a.m. and 12 Noon, when we are all assembled at the Windmill, we will hold our Service and afterwards enjoy the shared picnic. Paper plates, picnic cutlery, wine, water, fruit juice and plastic cups will be provided. There will be some chairs for those not able to sit on the grass.
Access for the Less Active
Those who wish come to the Service and picnic but not take part in the walk should park in the lay-by close to Wilton Windmill at about 11.30 a.m. and join the walkers when they arrive.
After the Picnic
Wilton Windmill will be open from 2.00 to 5.00 p.m. Why not stay on after the picnic to enjoy an interesting guided tour (admission fee)? There is a shop selling teas, souvenirs and traditionally ground flours. From the Windmill, it's a short walk of about 1/2 mile down Wilton Hill to Manor Farm, where the walk began.
What if it’s Wet?
If it's too wet to walk, we shall congregate at 10 a.m. in The Barn at Manor Farm (by kind permission of Mr Peter Lemon) for our Service, followed by the picnic.
Worship in the Savernake Team on 7th September
It is hoped that Savernake Team people will make the Open Air Service their principal act of worship on 7th September. However there also will be 8.00 a.m. celebrations of Holy Communion in each cluster.
Would you like to assist your community?
The Emergency Planning Unit (EPU) at Wiltshire County Council has a policy to recruit at least one Community Emergency Volunteer (CEV) per parish throughout the county.
The CEV is our point of contact within the local community. This may be for day-to-day emergency situations such as a gas leak, localised flooding, fire or for something that affects the entire county. Experience has shown that when we need to communicate to the community it is vital that we have a contact locally and more importantly someone with local knowledge.
During the recent flooding in the county CEVs were able to highlight some at risk areas not covered by the flood warning scheme, early warning of flash flooding and highlight vulnerable members of their community that were at risk of flooding and needed assistance.
If you would like to play a part in helping your community please contact your parish clerk to volunteer as a CEV. Full training is given by the EPU. The next training session is scheduled for Monday 28 April at County Hall Trowbridge.
Community First Aid Course
Any Ham resident wishing to attend the first aid course in the village hall should contact Richard Schofield on 01488 668145. The next course will be held later in the year – details to follow. Those who did not attend earlier courses having booked on to them should contact Richard to re-book.
Morning Worship to get Choir support
After many years during which Matins at Shalbourne and Ham has been celebrated without a choir, we will hear voices singing forth again from the chancel stalls.
Anyone from the Team who feels like joining us is welcome . If they can read music, so much the better, but the main requirement is the ability to sing out and help lead the congregation in praise and worship.
The choir will be led informally by Andrew Blake, and Daphne Hayden has kindly agreed to play the organ. A further short practice will be held before the services at 10.15am.
The initial aim is to stick mainly to familiar chants, canticles, and hymns.
However, the hope is that in due course the choir should be able to introduce the congregation to some lesser known hymns within that book, and fresh chants.
Should this new venture be well received we intend to continue with it on a regular basis on the fourth Sunday of each month.
For further information contact Andrew Blake (tel: 01672 871209) or Stephen Trapnell (tel: 01672 870514).
