Renewal Day 2008
| We were reminded that renewal is not just an annual event but a continual process where it’s God that takes the initiative and we must respond to Him. We were then given valuable time, in our busy lives, to spend time meditating on Psalm 84. The hour passed very quickly as we were asked to think of people, places, pieces of music and occasions that renew us which was actually a very interesting exercise. Many people went to sit outside in the glorious sunshine whilst some of us remained in the peace and serenity of the Church. |

After a picnic lunch on the church green we returned refreshed for worship and the last session of the day, ‘Encountering Jesus today’. Allison discussed the way we actually perceive Jesus and illustrated the various ways in which other nations all see Jesus in a different way to us, she showed us the picture of the Lesser Brethren which many of us remember from childhood and, in contrast, the Dancing Jesus and the Angry Jesus. We even heard a very amusing song by Stillgoe and Skellern about a lady who was in no way going to encompass any sort of evangelical service especially the touchy feely bits! Her response to the peace was ‘Don’t touch me…..’ |

Alison sees Jesus as a revolutionary who always answers questions with another question, or a story or a metaphor. We live in a world full of people telling us what we want and how to get it. Jesus turned the world upside down and built a new one with his teaching by questions, metaphors and stories. It has been said of Jesus that He re-constructed reality and offered a new reality. We all have our own personal picture of Jesus but it was good to have time to reflect on that perception. I would like to thank Allison Morgan for giving me time out to actually reflect on the way I see Jesus and it was a great opportunity to make a conscious renewal of faith. Hilary Taylor. |

Matthew Ch.28 v 1 - 10
After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb. There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it. His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow. The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men. The angel said to the women, "Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples: 'He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him.' Now I have told you." So the women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy, and ran to tell his disciples. Suddenly Jesus met them. "Greetings," he said. They came to him, clasped his feet and worshiped him. Then Jesus said to them, "Do not be afraid. Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me."
Richard delivers his talk entitled "Easter Surprise" In his talk, Richard delivers a children's version of the Resurrection. A rabbit, whose great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, (sorry Richard how many great's was that?) Grandfather, was present when Christ rose from the dead, and how this new life is remembered by forgetfull rabbits with the sharing of chocolate eggs!

1 Peter Ch1 v 3 - 4
"Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade - kept in heaven for you."
Good Friday Service
The service started in church, with the first reading setting the scene of the 'Last Supper'.
Reading 1.
When it was evening, Jesus sat at table with the twelve disciples. Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed and broke it, and gave it to the disciples and said, "Take, eat; this is my body." And he took a cup, and when He had given thanks He gave it to them, saying, "Drink of it, all of you; for this is my blood of the New Covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. I tell you I shall not drink again of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father's kingdom."
Following the reading, and in procession behind the cross, the service moved outside. |

In the garden of the Church representing the garden of Gethsemane. |
Reading 2.
Then Jesus went with them to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, "Sit here, while I go yonder and pray." And taking with him Peter and James and John, he bagan to be sorrowful and troubled. Then he said to them: " My soul is very sorrowful, even unto death; remain here, and watch with me." And going a little farther he fell on his face and prayed, " My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as Thou wilt".
Then he came to the disciples and said to them, "Are you still sleeping and taking your rest? "Behold, the hour is at hand, and the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of the sinners. Rise, let us be going; see, my betrayer is at hand."
While he was still speaking, Judas came one of the twelve, and with him a great crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief of priests and the elders of the people. Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, " The one I kiss is the man; seize him." And he came up to Jesus at once and said, "Hail Master" and he kissed him. Jesus said to him, " Friend why are you here?" Then they came up and laid hands on Jesus and seized him. Then all of the disciples forsook him and fled. Then those who had seized Jesus led him to Caiaphas, the High Preist, where the scribes and the elders gathered.

Reading 3.
Now the chief priests and the whole council sought false testimony against Jesus, that they might put him to death, but they found none, though many false witnesses came forward. At last two came forward and said: "This fellow said, 'I am able to destroy the temple of God, and to build it in three days'." and the High Priest stood up and said, "Have you no answer to make? What is it that these men testify against you?" But Jesus was silent.
And the High Priest said to him, "I adjure you, by the living God, tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God." Jesus said to him, "You have said so. But I tell you, hereafter you will see the Son of man seated at the right hand of Power, and coming on the clouds of heaven". Then the High Priest tore his robes and said, "He has uttered blasphemy. What is your judgement?"
They answered, "He deserves death."
When morning came, all the chief priests and the elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death; and they bound him and led him away and delivered him to Pilate, the Govenor. Now Jesus stood beforethe Govenor; and the Govenor asked him, "Are you the king of the Jews?" Jesus said to him, "You have said so."
But when he was accused by the chief priests and elders, he made no answer. Then Pilate said to him, "Do you not hear how many thing they testify against you?" But he gave no answer, not even to a single charge, so thatthe Govenor wondered greatly. So when Pilate saw he was gaining nothing, but rather that a riot was beginning, he took water and washed his hands before the crowd, saying "I am innocent of this man's blood; see to it yourselves."
And after having scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified.
Back in Church . Following the cross to 'Calvary' |
Reading 4.
As they were marching out, they came upon a man of Cyrene, Simon by name; this man they compelled to carry the cross. And when they came to a place called Golgotha (which means the place of a skull), they offered him wine to drink, mingled with gall, but when he tasted it, he would not drink it. And when they had crucified him, they divided his garments among them by casting lots: then they sat down and kept watch over him there. And over his head they put the charges against him, which read, "This is Jesus the King of the Jews".
Now from the sixth hour there was darkness all over the land untill the ninth hour. And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, Eli, Eli, lama sabach-tha-ni?" that is, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?" And some of the bystanders hearing it said, "This man is calling Elijah". And one of them at once ran and took a sponge, filled it with vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave it to him to drink. And Jesus cried again with a loud voice and yielded up his spirit.

"God bless him who comes in the name of the Lord" Matthew 21 v.9
We set of from from the church at 11:00 am toward our first station at Seymour Court. Despite the weather, which was wet, and and at time very blustery, most of us managed to sing as we steadied our umbrellas and hold on to our order of service and hymn sheets, as we walked.

Jesus Rides into Jerusalem on a Donkey
2nd Reading
As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage on the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, "Go to the village ahead of you, and at once you will find a donkey tied there, with her colt by her. Untie them and bring them to me. If anyone says anything to you, tell him that the Lord needs them, and he will send them right away." This took place to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet: "Say to the Daughter of Zion, 'See, your king comes to you, gentle and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.' The disciples went and did as Jesus had instructed them. They brought the donkey and the colt, placed their cloaks on them, and Jesus sat on them. A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted, "Hosanna to the Son of David!"
"Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!"
"Hosanna in the highest!"
When Jesus entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred and asked, "Who is this?" The crowds answered, "This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee."

3rd Reading Jesus Rides into Jerusalem on a Donkey As he approached Jerusalem and saw the city, he wept over it and said, "If you, even you, had only known on this day what would bring you peace—but now it is hidden from your eyes. The days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment against you and encircle you and hem you in on every side. They will dash you to the ground, you and the children within your walls. They will not leave one stone on another, because you did not recognize the time of God's coming to you." Luke 19 v 41-44 |

Mothering Sunday 2nd March 2008
At the end of the 11:00 am service, the children gathered at the front of the church to collect daffodil posies to give to their Mum's. The posies were made by a small group of ladies who organized the picking and the arranging of the flowers the previous day.
